The hopes and wishes that lovers hold for Valentine's Day can result in a day fraught with extreme emotions. These emotions are depicted by values of blue to blue/black and reflecting the Moon’s light. At the lower left foreground, we feel lightness depicting overall happiness. Overlaying this state of happiness is a passionate, red, happy heart.
At the top left we see a heart mostly intact and willing to 'stay the course' despite disappointment. There is still hope and passion in this heart portrayed by the Moon’s subdued light making its way toward the dark emotions in the background – hope for a better day.
Disappointment and sadness can also be the experience of Valentine's Day. At the right of the painting we notice the darker blue sad face streaming tears. Above that sad face can be seen a heart that has 'come apart'. And to the left of our sad face we see a black heart. This heart needs to cleanse and purge its disappointment in the sea of emotion to emerge hopeful again for a better Valentine’s Days to come.
