About the Artwork

This portrait was the Artist's first big push towards exploring portraiture, a process that led her to develop a different style from her usual way of working. The subject is the Artist's nephew, who is feeling the freedom of self-expression through their Drag Art. They are a role model and advocate for queer youth, Indigenous and People of Colour in the community. A sense of movement is captured as Xana comes out of a spin with bright eyes and a smile to welcome you into a safe space. Bold colours leave a lasting impression in this re-imagining of the Host of Drag Brunch at a local Gastown pub. Her hand gesture is an invitation to be your true self.

Corinne Palmer

White Rock, British Columbia

From my ongoing series, “Who We Are”, an exploration of my unique perspective on being human, these deeply personal works convey the value in my life stories. Emblems representing my memories and experiences are carefully curated on shelves in the back of my mind; an invitation to self-reflection and remembrance.

"“I was born an Artist. Painting is something I’m driven to do. It’s a cathartic, healing process that helps me to connect with myself and others. When my brush hits the canvas the whole world melts away - it’s just my favourite music, the art and me.”"
