About the Artwork

In this re-imagining of one of my favourite photos of my Mom, I focused on how the warmth of the colours and the levels of light could drive the mood. It's aglow with nostalgia without becoming too sweet. My aim was to imbue the work with a real sense of determination as well as softness.
The portrait was inspired by a photo my Dad took on a family vacation in 1974. My Mom and Dad have been married for over 50 years, and they're best friends. In those early years, Dad's job in aviation often meant he was away for months at a time. He didn't want to be, but he had no choice. This was really hard for Mom, with two young children to care for, on top of keeping things running at home. It was a very different time in the 70's, so I can just imagine how difficult it must have been for them both. She said she had no choice but to do what was needed. I admire her strength and ability to sit in the driver's seat, to take on the role of both parents when Dad was away. She kept our family together.

From my ongoing series, “Who We Are”, an exploration of my unique perspective on being human, these deeply personal works convey the value in my life stories. Emblems representing my memories and experiences are carefully curated on shelves in the back of my mind; an invitation to self-reflection and remembrance.

"“I was born an Artist. Painting is something I’m driven to do. It’s a cathartic, healing process that helps me to connect with myself and others. When my brush hits the canvas the whole world melts away - it’s just my favourite music, the art and me.”"
