Butoh, a Japanese form of dance, inspires this work. This dance is about confronting the unexpressed darkness within so that it can be transformed in the light, giving rise to compassion. It was a personal challenge to paint this experience of darkness: a movement that can feel discordant; the dancer streaked with white body paint. The more I painted, the more I found beauty in the meaning of the dance. I used layers of wax, building up and destroying marks.
