About the Artwork

This oil painting is inspired by the famous fountain of Neptune (Fontana del Nettuno), found at the north end of Rome's Piazza Navona. I first visited the piazza in 2011 and photographed the fountain in early morning and late afternoon light from the east side. The fountain's base dates to 1574, but the imposing sculpture of Neptune spearing the octopus (by Antonio della Bitta) was added much later in 1878. I was struck by the drama of the fight, enhanced by the tense, angular pose of Neptune. I decided to enhance the drama by darkening the walls of the surrounding
