Nelly Kazenbroot, Human Migration
33" x 14", 3 hinged canvases, with acrylic paint, $1,950.00
With this painting, I have created a foldable image of the human migration between cities, continents, and planets. A small sample of the human trajectories around the earth and into the universe is captured by black threads leading between steel pin heads. This is a visual discussion of the restless and colonizing human spirit, where it has led us, and where it might lead us in the future. The map-like construct of the canvas supports blends with the painted surface, using one of the structural features I have been creating to enrich my artworks. The works of ancient cartographers are also ideal reference points for the juxtaposition of opposite elements. The Cantino planisphere of 1500 and the Catalan Atlas of 1373 combine exquisite artistry with scientific skill, and flat illustrations with 3-dimensional imagery; I have allowed my contemporary image to grow out of the distant beginnings of these ancient maps.
