Monica Gewurz, OUT OF THE BLUE
12" x 48", acrylic mixed media on canvas, $1,450.00
Out of the Blue, is inspired by the complexity of a tidal pool. An abstraction, exploring the power, inspiration and reflective quality of this watery world, where I was looking to find a sense of floating, falling into this space. I began this piece building it by hand with no paintbrushes or knives on wet canvas and manipulating the paint by washing it off, where experimentation and chance played an important role. The last layer includes loose gestures using copper patinas, applied with a large pallet knife creating shapes and movement. The result is soothing but with an underlying tension, aimed to awaken the viewer’s consciousness allowing them to experience the painting-perhaps sparking memories, inviting thought, or freeing the mind to wander, imagine and dream. I find it humbling when viewers immerse themselves in the layers, shades and texture of my paintings and they share with me how they are seduced into a visual-tactile and emotional experience. When this connection is made, I feel my mission is accomplished as I inspired self-discovery and created connection, an encounter- a meeting of minds and souls between the viewer and myself.
This piece will not be included in the physical exhibition on Granville Island but meets the quality standards of the FCA and is classified as, "Recognized Artwork."
