Dave Brewin, Keeper Of The Word
48" x 30", Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas, $820.00
This piece was inspired by regalia that I saw at a recent Pow Wow I attended worn by a member of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band in Keremeos. The colours of the regalia have always fascinated me but at this particular Pow Wow, there was a gentleman dancer that was wearing the colours that you see in this piece. The beautifully coloured regalia and headdresses worn by the indigenous dancers are sometimes passed down from generation to generation, each carrying the stories that went along with them. This is where the title of “Keeper of The Word” derived from. In this piece, the top section and flowing to the left is the headdress and the lower section the regalia itself. The movement of the dancer is shown by the flowing lines that wrap around the regalia and headdress. The white negative space around the dancer allows the details to come forward. I hope that you enjoy looking at this piece as much as I did creating it.
