Though I’ve not yet visited the Haida Gwaii area, over many years I’ve painted totems and totem themes in both watercolour on paper and acrylic on canvas. I find the history, meanings and beauty of totems is quite inspirational. Haida Gwaii is well known, an important place in British Columbia and renown world-wide. In this semi-abstraction of weather-beaten old totem poles, they seem to be still standing and surviving in their solitude.

With a leaning towards abstraction, many of Susannah Paranich’s paintings reflect coastal influences of water, skies, beaches, mountains, landscape, nature—sometimes invoking a sense of mystery, spirituality; intuitive painting drawing on the subconscious and include pure abstractions, abstract expressionism.
