Marie-Hortense Fiquet is better known today as Madame Cezanne, and we know her almost entirely as the subject of a number of paintings by Paul Cezanne. My exploration started with a copy of Cezanne’s painting “Madame Cezanne in a Red Armchair.” That was a very instructive exercise in this master’s process and results, but as of course I could not see his subject with my own eyes I was left dissatisfied. What could I know about Hortense Fiquet? I got out my own armchair and assumed her pose. Her body language. What I imagined to be her character, her attitude.

"In painting as in life, whatever distance you travel just opens up further vistas for exploration. Subtleties, bold statements, complexities of relationships, colour, colour, colour. I wish I could paint forever!"
