Inspired by the bright colours of the California poppies that would dot the fields where I used to live, the painting has now for me taken on a new meaning. It also reflects the fires emblazing the state as global warming takes its toll. It is almost an aerial view with multi-demensional shapes representing the collision of the urban and natural world in flames.

Karen Marki
Vancouver, British Columbia
Karen Marki's paintings are layers of several works built onto the canvas like an excavation site, encouraging the viewer to see what lies beneath. Her process includes using unusual tools to create markings and texture inspired by both the urban and natural world.
