As part of a series I started during my COVID social distancing entitled "Nature Squared", I created this abstract from my memories of the impressive Blue Hydragea flower. Until moving to Vancouver, I had never seen this beautiful perennial in anything other than a photo. I wanted to use depth and dimension to capture the intensity of its bloom and the symbolic burst of energy it brings as it magically unfurls. It is also a reminder that nature moves forward in spite of the current world events or news cycle.

Karen Marki's paintings are layers of several works built onto the canvas like an excavation site, encouraging the viewer to see what lies beneath. Her process includes using unusual tools to create markings and texture inspired by both the urban and natural world.
